Monastery Channel Strip

Everything you need to mix a track: EQ, two classic compressors, a transient shaper, tape and stereo width. Put it on every channel and the mix starts to sound like a record.

Equalizer & filters

The broad curves of a British desk

Four bands with the stepped frequencies and wide, musical curves of 1960s British studio EQ. It's hard to make it sound bad: boost the top and it opens up without getting harsh. Low and high cut filters tidy up both ends.

The compressor section: Threshold, Attack, Makeup and Release, with the MU / FET switch.

Compressor

Two classics on one switch

MU is a valve vari-mu in the style of the famous 1960s limiters. Put it on drums: the kick pulls the kit down and it swells back, that pumping sound you can't get any other way.

FET is a fast, punchy compressor in the style of the blue-stripe studio classic. It works on nearly everything: vocals, bass, guitars, room mics.

The transient section is more useful than you'd expect: PUNCH brings out the hit of a drum, SUSTAIN tightens a ringing kit or lets the room bloom.

The tape section.

Tape

Four machines on one knob

Tape is a big part of the records we love, so this is where most of the research went. Pick a studio reel-to-reel at 7½, 15 or 30 ips, or a lo-fi machine for as much tape character as you can get. SATURATION pushes it harder without making it louder, and WOW / FLUTTER goes from a well-kept deck to a worn one.

TAPE MIX blends in the clean signal. With wow turned up, the two drift against each other into tape flanging.

The nickel POWER toggle switch.

Output

Quick stereo width

ADT is the 1960s double-tracking trick: a slightly late, wandering copy that thickens a vocal or guitar. WIDTH spreads it across the stereo field, even from a mono track.

Workflow

Fast to use

  • Click any printed value on the faceplate to jump straight to it.
  • Every knob scrolls at the same rate across its scale. Double-click to reset.
  • Backlit IN buttons bypass each section with a short crossfade, so switching doesn't click.
  • Resizable window that keeps the panel's proportions.
  • All settings save with your project.
