Compatibility
What do I need to run the plug-ins?
A Mac running macOS 11 Big Sur or later, Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) or Intel, and a DAW that loads VST3 or Audio Unit plug-ins.
Which DAWs work?
Any VST3 or Audio Unit host: Logic Pro, GarageBand, REAPER, Ableton Live, Cubase and Nuendo, Studio One, Bitwig Studio, FL Studio, Reason and others.
Does it work in Logic Pro or GarageBand?
Yes. The installer includes an Audio Unit (AU) version alongside the VST3, so the plug-ins appear in Logic Pro, GarageBand, MainStage and other AU hosts. In Logic, look under Audio Units > Monastery Audio.
Pro Tools (AAX)? Windows?
Not at launch. Tell us if you'd use them. Demand decides what comes next.
How much CPU does it use?
The Channel Strip runs its compressor and tape at 4× oversampling, so it uses more CPU than a simple EQ. Every Mac and session is different, so the free trial is the best way to check how many instances yours runs comfortably.
Installing
How do I install?
Open the downloaded .dmg and double-click the installer inside. It puts the VST3 and the Audio Unit in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins (untick either one under Customize). Then restart your DAW; REAPER and other VST3 hosts may need a plug-in rescan.
macOS says it can't verify the developer.
That's expected for now: we haven't registered with Apple's developer programme yet, so macOS can't check who made the installer. It's safe to open:
- macOS 15 Sequoia or later: click Done, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the message about the installer, then enter your password.
- macOS 11 to 14: right-click (or Control-click) the installer, choose Open, then click Open.
You only do this once per installer. The plug-ins themselves then load normally in your DAW.
How do I uninstall?
Delete Monastery Channel Strip.vst3 (or Monastery Effects) from /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and the matching .component from /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components.
Trial and activation
How does the trial work?
Every plug-in is fully working for 14 days of use. Only days you actually open it count. When the trial ends nothing breaks: your projects still load and every setting is kept, but the sound mutes for a moment every 45 seconds until you activate.
How do I activate?
Click the small TRIAL tag under the serial number on the faceplate, paste the licence key from your receipt email, and press Activate. It takes a few seconds and is only needed once per computer.
My studio computer isn't online. Can I still activate?
Yes. In the plug-in's licence window, copy the machine code. On any phone or computer, go to Offline activation, enter your key and the code, and download your licence file. Copy it to the studio Mac and choose Load licence file, or drag it onto the licence window.
How many computers can I use?
Three per licence, for example a studio Mac, a laptop and a spare. To move a licence, click REGISTERED under the serial number on the old computer and click Deactivate. If a computer died or was stolen, contact us and we'll free its slot.
Does the plug-in phone home?
Only when you click Activate or Deactivate. After that it checks its licence file on your computer, offline, every time it loads. No analytics, no tracking.
Do I need an iLok or an account?
No.
I bought a new Mac. What now?
Install, then activate with the same key. If you've used all three activations, deactivate an old computer, or email us.
Sound
Is it an emulation of a particular piece of gear?
No. Each section is an original model of how a type of hardware behaves: magnetic tape, a variable-mu valve limiter, a tape echo, a spring tank. Everything was tuned by ear on real mixes. They're inspired by the 1960s studio sound, but they aren't clones and aren't endorsed by any manufacturer.
Does it add hiss or noise?
No. The models don't add hiss, hum or crackle.
Can I use it for mastering?
Yes. On the mix bus, try 30 ips tape with low saturation, the vari-mu just tickling the meter, and the EQ's broad shelves. The compressor and tape are oversampled with linear-phase filters, and the latency is reported to your DAW.
